Context and Artistic Process

El Malvón Rojo was developed as part of Nanópera, a residency dedicated to the creation of new short operas through collaboration between composers, librettists, stage directors and performers. Conceived as a platform for experimentation, the residency encouraged new approaches to operatic creation while adapting the scale of production to independent artistic contexts.

The opera unfolds through the return of Gabylondo to his childhood home, where memory and imagination merge into a dreamlike landscape inhabited by ghosts, absences and unresolved family relationships. The staging embraced its grotesque dimension, allowing humour, tenderness and violence to coexist within the same theatrical space.

Working in close dialogue with the newly composed score, the creative process sought to integrate music, movement and scenic action into a unified dramaturgical language. The intimate chamber format encouraged an economy of scenic resources while placing the performers’ physical presence and relationships at the centre of the production.

As part of a programme presenting several newly created operas, the production explored how contemporary chamber opera can function as a flexible artistic form, capable of bringing together composers, librettists and performers through collaborative creation while expanding the possibilities of independent operatic practice.

As Co-Founder and President of Barbados Artes Escénicas, I was part of the company’s artistic leadership, sharing responsibility with Diego Rodríguez for its artistic direction while also contributing to its strategic development, production planning and organizational management alongside my credited artistic role in this production.
