Overview
Feliz Cumple Ella is a contemporary chamber opera with music by Sebastián Pozzi Azzaro and a libretto by Jimena Municoy. Developed within Nanópera, a residency for the creation of short operas founded by Barbados Artes Escénicas, the work follows a young woman’s journey from childhood to adulthood as she confronts the patriarchal structures that shape her life. Premiered as part of a programme of newly created chamber operas, the production explored the intersection of music theatre, performance and contemporary social narratives through an intimate and experimental operatic language.

Feliz Cumple Ella was developed as part of Nanópera, a residency dedicated to the creation of new short operas through collaboration between composers, librettists, stage directors and performers. Conceived as a platform for experimentation, the residency encouraged new approaches to operatic creation while adapting the scale of production to independent artistic contexts.
Structured as a sequence of birthday celebrations, the opera follows the protagonist from birth to adulthood, revealing how family expectations and patriarchal norms gradually shape her identity. The staging approached each birthday as a theatrical ritual in which memory, repetition and transformation became the central dramaturgical devices.
The production centred on the performer’s presence, creating an intimate theatrical experience built around a single body on stage. The predominantly electronic musical language was punctuated by key moments performed live on upright piano by the composer, Sebastián Pozzi Azzaro, creating a continuous dialogue between recorded and live sound. This relationship between performer, music and space became the structural axis of the staging.
Developed for the chamber format of Nanópera, the production explored how minimal scenic resources could generate a theatrical experience through performance, rhythm and visual composition. The result proposed a contemporary operatic language where the intimacy of the solo performer became the vehicle for broader questions of identity, gender and emancipation.
As Co-Founder and President of Barbados Artes Escénicas, I was part of the company’s artistic leadership, sharing responsibility with Diego Rodríguez for its artistic direction while also contributing to its strategic development, production planning and organizational management alongside my credited artistic role in this production.
